2003 In memory of the 4th of July back home, I thought I would include a couple clips of how the US influences and is viewed by folks around here... in particular, the local ex-pat times... The Tico Times. In case all y'all back home hadn't heard, the US is looking to save its ass in The Hague by getting countries around the world to agree to support Act 98 of the Rome Statute. In case you have no clue (like I didn't) of what Act 98 of the Rome Statute is, its the agreement that grants immunity to US citizens before the Hague Tribunal... the de-facto world court of justice. Why is it called the Rome Statute? Because Rome is the capital of one of our strongest European allies... good 'ol Italy... (it sure wouldn't sound very good if it was called the Seattle Statute would it? i also am a little curious what the other 97 acts are... most likely just carriage-returns to get down to the good stuff) Now the world court in the Hague is not blemish-free, but certainly they are much more of an impartial and somewhat objective group of people who ostensibly are trying to set things right in the world. Obviously the US is a little scared of the court of world opinion. And just why would any country agree to let the US skate free in the world court? Its a case of arm-twisting of the worst degree... but this time the US is screwing themselves big time.... this is really pretty funny. I submit for your pleasure... The other story that caught my eye was this one on an Arkansas business 'tycoon' and his ... It has been so long since I wrote a letter to the editor, that I felt somewhat compelled... Here are my thoughts.. Sorry Ariel. Oh... and one more thing. A beautiful little thing thru the Google web site... my excellent friend Davis pointed it out to me. If you go to Google, and type in "Weapons of Mass Destruction" and then click on "I'm Feeling Lucky" you get a subtle little surprise. In case they've succumbed to the big, wide thumb of Dub-ya by the time you read this, I saved it... here's the page you would have gotten back. (make sure you look closely.... its not what you think).
