2003 made a couple friends... chiwa, chanti and rolando. my new rastafarian brothas. they came up to me last night and offered to buy the scout. well, trade for it anyway. "we'll give you some land, man... land" at first they seemed a little offended that i didn't immediately accept their proposal... but after a while they turned cheerful, and thus began an evening of drinking, partaking of the sacrament, and much story telling... in costa rica, anyone can claim land if they've been squatting on it for more than 6 months, and if they have made some improvements. it doesn't matter if there is already another deeded owner to the land or not. all you need to do is go down to the land office and file your paperwork making a claim. if you can prove you've been there for 6 months with pictures, witness or notarized statement then you're in. as you might imagine, differences of opinion do arise. so instead of selling them the truck i offered to take them on a trip up into the jungle. "show me the craziest, gnarliest, muddiest, steepest dirt road you know," i challenged. "no problem," said chanti in a moment of quiet clarity... "we can do 'dat." so bright and early this morning, i dropped by their little bodega outside of town and we began our tour. first stop: beer. i have to say that they did a fine job on route selection. |
